Tower Of Power ‎– Tower Of Power

Tower of Power (1973) – Classic Funk & Soul LP Review

Tower of Power self-titled 1973 funk and soul LP album cover

Warner Bros. Records 1973 ‎– BS 2681

notes:

Tower of Power emerged from Oakland, California, in 1968 and quickly
forged a signature sound that blended soul, funk, R&B, jazz, and jazz-funk
becoming one of the most influential horn bands in modern music.
Rather than simply supplementing rhythm and blues with brass,
Tower of Power made the horn section the heartbeat of their groove
a bold move that set them apart from their contemporaries
and influenced generations of musicians.

Woody Herman – Light My Fire

Cadet Records– Vinyle, LP, Album, Stereo

Cadet records 1968 – LPS-819 DJ

 notes:

Woody Herman, almost alone among the veteran bandleaders of the swing era,
went out of his way to keep an open mind toward new developments in jazz
and pop music. This particular LP dismayed many of Herman's longtime fans,
because it found his orchestra performing such numbers as "Macarthur Park"
(before Maynard Ferguson discovered it), "Light My Fire," "I Say a Little P
rayer" and Smokey Robinson's "Here I Am, Baby."
Richard Evans contributed the arrangements and two originals including
"Impressions of Strayhorn," a feature for Herman's alto and clarinet.
The other soloists include
 tenors Sal Nistico and
 Frank Vicari.
Although a sincere effort, the end results often sound a little silly, as
one would expect in encountering Woody Herman's Big Band playing the Doors.

Funk Inc. Priced To Sell

Prestige Records Vinyl, LP, Album

Prestige records  1974 P 10087

credits and notes:

Priced To Sell would be Funk,Inc.'s last LP for Prestige.
A more melodic mix of modes from Funk Inc  with some cool production
by David Axelrod. The band's gritty funky is stretched out this time,
and overall the sound's got kind of that mid 70s Prestige feel
but the work in a variety of styles here. Includes cooking jazzy funk & soul,
bits of the gritty groove they made their name on, and a couple tunes
with some emotive lead and soaring backing vocals! "Where Are We Going"
and "Price to Sell". Also includes "It Ain't The Spotlight", "God Only Knows",
"Gimme Some Lovin'", "Somewhere In My Mind" and "The Girl Of My Dreams".
