Robert Parker – Twistin' Out In Space (Imperial 5842)

Robert Parker – Twistin' Out In Space  Imperial 5842

updated 10/05/2026

Robert Parker – Mash Potatoes All Nite Long - Twistin' Out In Space Imperial 5842 45 RPM

 Imperial Records 1962 ‎– X5842

description:

Robert Parker’s “Mash Potatoes All Nite Long” b/w “Twistin' Out In Space”
is a classic early-1960s New Orleans R&B and soul 45, released on
Imperial Records as X5842 in 1962. The single captures Parker at the
intersection of New Orleans rhythm & blues, early soul and the
dance-oriented twist sound that was popular at the time.

The A-side, “Mash Potatoes All Nite Long,” is a lively, groove-driven
performance built around Parker’s vocal and saxophone presence,
while “Twistin' Out In Space” continues the energetic dance feel with
a strong horn-led arrangement. Contemporary trade reviews described
both sides as effective dance records, highlighting
the records' infectious beat and band-backed sound.

The two songs were recorded in New Orleans on April 4, 1962,
during a period when the city's highly regarded studio musicians
were creating some of the most distinctive R&B recordings of the era.
The session personnel included Robert Parker (vocals, tenor saxophone),
Edward Frank (piano), Justin Adams (guitar), Frank Fields (bass),
and Smokey Johnson (drums).

Both songs were written by Robert Parker, whose songwriting
credits for the two titles were registered in 1962.

The Imperial 5842 single is an excellent example of the New Orleans
dance-R&B sound of the early 1960s and an appealing record for
collectors of New Orleans soul, R&B, early soul 45s,
Imperial Records and rare groove vinyl.

Line-up / Musicians:

Robert Parker – vocals, tenor saxophone
Edward Frank – piano
Justin Adams – guitar
Frank Fields – bass
Smokey Johnson – drums

The O’Jays Comin’ Through 1965 debut soul album cover

Imperial ‎Records 1965       LP-12290

notes:

Comin’ Through is one of The O’Jays’ early albums, recorded before their
classic 1970s run with Gamble & Huff. Released on Imperial Records,
it reflects a mid-60s soul sound influenced by Motown and classic R&B,
with smoother vocal arrangements rather than
the socially conscious funk they later became famous
