The Three Sounds – Soul Symphony | Blue Note BST 84341

The Three Sounds Soul Symphony Blue Note BST 84341 1969 jazz vinyl LP

Blue Note  records 1969 – BST 84341

notes:

The Three Sounds – Soul Symphony is a 1969 Blue Note album
featuring pianist Gene Harris, bassist Henry Franklin and drummer
Carl Burnett. Catalogued as Blue Note BST 84341, the record
expands the classic Three Sounds piano-trio format with
orchestral colors, including strings,
French horn, flute, guitar and percussion.

The sessions took place at Liberty Studios in Los Angeles on
August 26–28, 1969. Monk Higgins served as composer, arranger
and conductor, giving the music a distinctive large-ensemble
setting around the Three Sounds. Additional overdubs feature
vocalists Alex Brown, Mamie Galore and Clydie King.

The album contains “Soul Symphony,” “Repeat After Me,”
“Upper Four Hundred,” “Popsicle Pimp” and “Black Sugar.”
The individual tracks form a continuous musical concept,
with the orchestral arrangements placing Gene Harris's
piano at the center of a sophisticated late-1960s soul-jazz sound.

For vinyl collectors, the original US stereo Blue Note BST 84341
is particularly relevant as the 1969 US issue documented
 in the Blue Note discography.

Quartette Trés Bien Sky High Decca Records DL 4715 1965 jazz vinyl LP cover

DECCA RECORDS 1965                            DL24715

notes:

Sky High is one of the most distinctive recordings by the
St. Louis jazz group Quartette Trés Bien. Released by Decca
in 1965, the album combines soulful piano, acoustic bass,
drums and African-influenced percussion to create a lively
blend of jazz, Latin rhythms and popular-song standards.

Led by pianist Jeter Thompson, the quartet developed a
highly recognizable sound, with Richard Simmons on bass,
Albert St. James on drums and Percy James on congas and bongos.
The strong rhythmic emphasis and percussion give the album
a warm, sophisticated groove that places Sky High comfortably
within the soul-jazz and Latin-jazz territory of the mid-1960s.

 notes:

Soul Fingers captures Morris Nanton at the intersection
of soul jazz, hard bop and Latin-inflected grooves.
His relaxed but highly rhythmic piano is supported by the
long-standing partnership of bassist Norman Edge and
drummer Al Beldini, with Johnny Murray Jr.'s congas
adding extra drive. The unusual appearance of
Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers on “Troubles Of The World”
gives the opening track an especially distinctive Latin-soul character.
Contemporary DownBeat praised the trio while
noting the contrasting effect of Pucho's appearance.
