Little Bob & The Lollipops – Nobody But You (1960s Louisiana Soul)
La Louisianne Records 1966 – LL-113
notes:
Few records capture the raw energy of 1960s Louisiana swamp soul
quite
Fronted by singer Camille Bob, the group became a key act in the Gulf
Coast
R&B scene, blending New Orleans rhythm & blues, swamp pop
and classic soul.
Their recordings for the La Louisianne label in Lafayette produced
some
of the finest regional soul records of the decade.
The song Nobody But You was originally written and recorded in 1958
by
Chicago R&B singer Dee Clark. The original version reached No. 3 on
the
U.S. R&B chart and No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100,
becoming one of Clark’s early hits.
When Little Bob & The Lollipops recorded their version in the
mid-1960s,
they transformed the song into a horn-driven Louisiana soul
groove,
replacing the polished Chicago R&B sound with a tougher Gulf Coast
rhythm section.
Recorded at La Louisianne Recording Studios in Lafayette, the track
features a
classic R&B lineup of guitar, bass, drums and horns, delivering a
direct, dance-floor
oriented sound typical of the regional scene.
These sessions also produced the band’s cult classic “I Got Loaded,”
which later
became Little Bob’s signature song and inspired numerous
covers
by artists from blues and roots scenes.
