Blue Note records 1962 – BLP 9001
Description
My Hour Of Need is Dodo Greene's sole album as
a Blue Note leader and one of the label's more
obscure early-1960s vocal releases. Recorded in
April 1962 at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in
Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, the album combines
Greene's soulful, blues-inflected voice with a superb
small group featuring tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec,
guitarist Grant Green, organist Sir Charles Thompson,
bassist Herbie Lewis or Milt Hinton,
and drummers Billy Higgins or Al Harewood.
The music sits comfortably between jazz, blues,
soul and R&B, with Quebec's warm tenor and
Thompson's organ providing an understated,
gospel-tinged backdrop for Greene's expressive vocals.
The program mixes standards, blues material
and popular songs, including “Trouble In Mind,”
“You Are My Sunshine,” “Lonesome Road,”
“Down By The Riverside”
and the title track “My Hour Of Need.”
