Album Description

Released in 1966 on Columbia Records, Popcorn & Soul:
Groovin' at the Movies captures jazz pianist Roy Meriwether
and his trio exploring memorable themes from Hollywood
films, popular cinema and contemporary entertainment.
Issued in stereo as Columbia CS 9298, with a mono
counterpart numbered CL 2498, this album brings together
jazz piano, swinging rhythms and
soulful interpretations of familiar melodies.

Rather than reproducing the original soundtrack
arrangements, the trio gives these well-known
compositions an intimate jazz treatment. From the
uplifting Disney classic “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” to the
elegant “The Shadow of Your Smile,” the programme moves
between film music, Broadway-associated
standards and popular songs of the era.

Meriwether's piano leads the performances,
supported by Philip Paul's drumming and Lester Bass's double bass.
The stripped-down trio format places the emphasis on melody,
rhythmic interplay and the musicians' interpretations, offering
a distinctive perspective on music originally written for the screen.
