The Three Sounds – Coldwater Flat Blue Note BST 84285

The Three Sounds – Coldwater Flat | Blue Note 1968

The Three Sounds Coldwater Flat Blue Note BST 84285 1968 jazz vinyl LP

BLUE NOTE RECORDS  1968           BST 84285

notes:

The Three Sounds – Coldwater Flat is a 1968 Blue Note Records album
featuring the classic trio of Gene Harris, Andrew Simpkins and Donald Bailey
with arrangements and orchestral direction by Oliver Nelson. Released as
Blue Note BST 84285, the album combines the Three Sounds’ piano-trio
approach with a large Los Angeles studio orchestra.

Recorded at Liberty Studios in West Hollywood, California, during April 1968,
the sessions brought together Harris on piano, Simpkins on bass and Bailey on drums
with an extensive ensemble of Los Angeles studio musicians.
Oliver Nelson arranged and conducted the orchestral parts.

The repertoire moves between jazz standards, contemporary pop material and
original compositions. Highlights include “The Look of Love,” “Georgia,” “My Romance,”
“Last Train to Clarksville,” “Do Do Do (What Now Is Next)” and Gene Harris’s “Star Trek.”

The album is particularly interesting to collectors because it documents a
distinctive late-1960s Blue Note direction: the intimate Three Sounds trio expanded
into a much larger orchestral setting. Blue Note itself describes the 1968 project as
an ambitious collaboration with Oliver Nelson, recorded over three days at Liberty Studios.
