 notes:

Released in March 1980, “That Driving Beat” by Red Beans & Rice
is a spirited British rhythm & blues and soul single that captures
the raw energy of the London club scene during the mod revival.
Produced by Pete Wingfield, the record delivers a punchy, groove-driven
interpretation of Willie Mitchell’s “That Driving Beat,” drawing on the
classic Memphis soul tradition and the powerful spirit of Stax-era rhythm & blues.
Red Beans & Rice were a Cardiff-based band known for their dedication to
vintage soul and R&B standards. Their lineup featured Laverne Brown on vocals,
Jeff Coleman on guitar, Mike Paice on saxophone and harmonica,
Benny Herbert on bass, and Tom Riley on drums.
The single was backed with “Throw It In The Grass” and released on
Chiswick Records as CHIS 124. It remains an interesting piece of
British R&B and mod-revival history, especially for collectors of
obscure soul, funk-influenced grooves, and independent UK releases.
“ That Driving Beat” is a fine example of a band keeping the spirit of
classic American soul alive on the British club circuit in the early 1980s.
