Description:
Johnny Lewis Quartet's *Shuckin' 'N Jivin'* is a rare Seattle soul-jazz
and jazz-funk album originally recorded in 1972 and reissued by
Luv N' Haight Records in 1998. Led by saxophonist and
multi-instrumentalist Johnny Lewis, the quartet combines soulful saxophone,
organ, guitar and drums with a deep, groove-driven rhythm section.
The original 1972 recordings were captured live at the Trojan House
in Seattle, where the Johnny Lewis Quartet worked as a house band.
The repertoire includes the funky title track, Ray Charles' "Blue Funk,"
Kenny Burrell's "Chitlins Con Carne," and Ann Ronell's "Willow Weep for Me."
The 1998 reissue also adds two later live performances, "Cissy Strut"
and "Them Changes," showcasing a trio featuring Johnny Lewis,
James Moody and Jack Toker.
With its Hammond organ, clavinet, soulful saxophone, blues influences
and extended grooves, *Shuckin' 'N Jivin'* has become a sought-after
example of American local jazz-funk and rare groove.
The Luv N' Haight LHLP-029 reissue helped bring this obscure
Seattle recording to a wider audience of soul-jazz and rare-groove collectors.

Recording dates
1972: Four tracks recorded live at the Trojan House, Seattle, Washington.
Later period, generally identified as 1975: two additional
live tracks from the trio lineup were added to the reissue.
Some of the live material subsequently received additional
studio overdubs involving horns and percussion.
The Northwest Music Archives independently lists the original
Jaro release Shuckin' 'n Jivin' as a 1972 Johnny Lewis Quartet recording.
