Released by Prestige Records in 1973, *Hangin’ Out* is the third studio album by Funk, Inc., blending jazz-funk, soul-jazz, organ groove and deep funk. The album was recorded on December 1, 1972, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Rudy Van Gelder engineering and Ozzie Cadena producing.
The group features Gene Barr on tenor saxophone, Bobby Watley on organ, Steve Weakley on guitar, Jimmy Munford on drums, Cecil Hunt on congas, and Gordon Edwards on electric bass on selected tracks. Watley and Munford also
provide vocals on “We Can Be Friends.”
The six-track album opens with “Smokin’ At Tiffany’s” and includes Funk, Inc.’s versions of Curtis Mayfield’s “Give Me Your Love,” Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now,” and the Bell/Hurtt composition “I’ll Be Around.” “We Can Be Friends” was written by Cecil Hunt, Jimmy Munford and Bobby Watley, while “Dirty Red”
