Bob & Earl – Bob & Earl | Crestview CRS 3055
notes:
Bob & Earl – Bob & Earl is a 1969 soul LP issued
in the United States on Crestview Records, CRS 3055.
The album brings together material associated with
the classic Bob & Earl sound, combining vocal-group soul,
dancefloor rhythms and the energetic style that later
became highly prized by Northern Soul collectors. Contemporary
trade coverage listed the album as a Crestview release in 1969.
The duo's history is closely connected with Bob Relf and Earl Nelson.
Relf joined Bob & Earl after Bobby Day left the original partnership,
while Nelson was also known as Jackie Lee. Their best-known recording,
“Harlem Shuffle,” dates from 1963 and became an enduring soul classic.
The Crestview LP is particularly interesting to collectors because it gathers
tracks that connect the Bob & Earl catalogue with the later Mirwood/Crestview
reissue history. Soul collectors have also noted that different British
and American LP editions can contain variations in the material and versions used.
credits:
Bob Relf – lead and harmony vocals
Earl Nelson – lead and harmony vocals
Bob Relf had replaced the original Bob of the duo,
Bobby Day, in the early 1960s. Relf was also known
as Bobby Garrett and Bobby Valentino,
while Earl Nelson later recorded as Jackie Lee.
The available discographical sources do not provide
a complete track-by-track instrumental personnel
list for CRS 3055. The album draws from recordings made at
different stages, so it should not be treated as
a single-session recording with one fixed backing band.
Recording dates
The Crestview LP itself was issued in 1969, but the recordings
are not all newly recorded in 1969. The album is essentially
a compilation/repackaging of Bob & Earl material from earlier years.
The Crestview discography identifies CRS 3055 as a 1969 release.
For “Harlem Shuffle,” the recording belongs to the duo's 1963
Los Angeles recording period, with Gene Page responsible
for the arrangement and Fred Smith producing
