The Dudley Moore Trio – Today | Atlantic SD-1000
Atlantic records 1971 – SD-1000
notes:
Today captures Dudley Moore in one of his finest jazz trio settings,
combining elegant piano playing, sophisticated arrangements and
relaxed improvisation. Released by Atlantic Records in 1971,
the album was recorded in Sydney during
the Dudley Moore Trio's Australian tour.
Moore is joined by Peter Morgan on bass and Chris Karan on drums,
forming a highly responsive piano trio with a refined late-night jazz
atmosphere. The repertoire mixes original compositions with
sophisticated interpretations of standards, including Burt Bacharach's
“The Look of Love” and Henry Mancini's “Two for the Road.”
The album also features Moore originals such as “Waterloo,”
“Before Love Went Out of Style,” “Song for Suzy,” “Robyn's Blues”
and “The Staircase.” “Song for Suzy,” dedicated to actress Suzy Kendall,
combines Moore's piano playing with his distinctive scat-style vocal.
For collectors of British jazz, piano-trio recordings and rare Australian
Atlantic pressings, Today is an interesting document of Dudley Moore's
musical career beyond his celebrated work as a comedian and actor.
