Stax Records 1971 ‎– STS 2040

description:

Albert King
– *Lovejoy* (Stax STS 2040) is a powerful 1971 electric blues
album produced and arranged by Don Nix. Recorded between
December 1970 and January 1971 in Hollywood and Muscle Shoals,
the album blends Albert King’s distinctive blues guitar and commanding
vocals with blues-rock, soul and funk influences.

The sessions feature an exceptional lineup including Jesse Ed Davis,
Tippy Armstrong, Wayne Perkins, Donald “Duck” Dunn, David Hood,
Jim Keltner, Roger Hawkins, Barry Beckett, John Gallie and Sandy Konikoff,
with backing vocals from Jeanie Greene and the Mount Zion Singers.

*Lovejoy* includes King’s versions of the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women”
and Taj Mahal’s “She Caught the Katy,” alongside Don Nix compositions such
as “Bay Area Blues,” “Lovejoy, Ill.” and “Going Back to Iuka.” The album captures
Albert King at the meeting point of electric blues, Southern soul and early-1970s blues-rock.
