Brother Jack McDuff Hot Barbeque Prestige Soul Jazz LP
Album Description:
Released in 1966 on Prestige Records, Hot Barbeque is a classic
soul-jazz album led by the great Hammond B-3 organist
Brother Jack McDuff. Featuring tenor saxophonist Red Holloway,
a young George Benson on guitar, and drummer Joe Dukes,
this energetic quartet delivers a powerful combination of
swinging jazz, bluesy grooves, funky rhythms, and soulful improvisation.
The album captures the infectious sound of mid-1960s organ jazz,
with McDuff's rich Hammond organ at the center of the music.
George Benson adds sharp guitar lines and fluid solos, while
Red Holloway brings a warm, expressive tenor saxophone sound.
Joe Dukes provides the driving rhythmic foundation that keeps
the quartet swinging throughout the session.
The opening title track, "Hot Barbeque," sets the mood with
its irresistible groove and lively interplay between the musicians.
Other highlights include "Briar Patch," "Hippy Dip," and
"The Three Day Thang," which showcase the group's rhythmic
energy and deep connection to blues and rhythm and blues traditions.
The album also features soulful interpretations of "The Party's Over"
and Arthur Hamilton's "Cry Me a River," demonstrating McDuff's ability
to transform familiar melodies into engaging soul-jazz performances.
For collectors of vintage jazz, Hammond organ recordings, funky jazz,
and rare Prestige Records releases, Hot Barbeque is an essential
example of the vibrant soul-jazz sound of the 1960s.
