NOLA RECORDS 1964 SINGLE 708 B side
description:
Willie Tee – “Teasin' You” / “Walking Up A One Way Street” is a classic slice
of mid-1960s New Orleans soul and R&B, originally issued on Nola Records
as N-708 in December 1964. Featuring Willie Tee (Wilson Turbinton)
on vocals and keyboards, the single captures the distinctive New Orleans
sound through a relaxed groove, soulful delivery and a memorable horn-driven arrangement.
“Teasin' You,” written by New Orleans R&B legend Earl King, became Willie Tee's
breakthrough recording. The superb flip side, “Walking Up A One Way Street,”
is another Earl King composition and is particularly admired for its buoyant rhythm,
horn arrangement and expressive vocal performance.
Both tracks were produced and arranged by Wardell Quezergue.
Willie Tee recorded with his group The Souls, formed with bassist George Davis
and drummer David Lee. The sessions were part of the vibrant New Orleans
recording scene associated with producer Wardell Quezergue and engineer/studio
owner Cosimo Matassa. “Teasin' You” later attracted the attention of Atlantic Records,
which licensed the recording for national release in 1965, where it reached No. 12
on the R&B chart and No. 97 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Today, the Nola N-708 original is highly regarded by collectors of New Orleans soul,
deep soul, R&B and rare 45 rpm 1960s vinyl. It remains one of Willie Tee's defining
recordings and an essential example of the sophisticated yet earthy New Orleans sound of the period.
