Morris Nanton Soul Fingers Prestige PRST 7467 1967 jazz LP

Prestige records 1967 ‎– PRST 7467

 notes:

Soul Fingers captures Morris Nanton at the intersection
of soul jazz, hard bop and Latin-inflected grooves.
His relaxed but highly rhythmic piano is supported by the
long-standing partnership of bassist Norman Edge and
drummer Al Beldini, with Johnny Murray Jr.'s congas
adding extra drive. The unusual appearance of
Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers on “Troubles Of The World”
gives the opening track an especially distinctive Latin-soul character.
Contemporary DownBeat praised the trio while
noting the contrasting effect of Pucho's appearance.

Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers Saffron & Soul Prestige PR 7502 1967 vinyl LP

Prestige records 1967 ‎ ‎– PRST 7502

notes:

Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers' Saffron & Soul is one of
the distinctive Latin soul and soul-jazz recordings from
Prestige's mid-1960s catalogue. Led by timbales player
Henry "Pucho" Brown, the group combined Afro-Cuban
percussion with jazz, soul, pop and R&B influences,
creating a hard-grooving sound that later attracted
attention from the acid-jazz scene.

The session features Pucho on timbales with Vincent McEwan
on trumpet, Claude Bartee and Harold Alexander on tenor saxophone,
Alexander also contributing flute, William Bivens on vibraphone,
John Spruill on piano and arrangements, James Phillips on bass,
William Curtis on drums, Richard Landrum on congas and
Norberto Apellaniz on bongos.

The album was recorded in Los Angeles in 1973, with
The Record Plant listed as the recording studio. Ronald,
Rudolph and O'Kelly Isley Jr. were credited as producers,
while Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff served as recording engineers.

The record contains some of the group's best-known recordings,
including “That Lady (Part 1 & 2),” “What It Comes Down To”
and their celebrated interpretation of “Summer Breeze.”
The album reached No. 8 on the Billboard Pop Albums
chart and No. 2 on the Billboard Black Albums chart.

The Isley Brothers Harvest for the World T-Neck PZ 33809 original vinyl LP cover

T-Neck records 1976 ‎– PZ 33809

 notes:

Released in 1976, Harvest For The World is one of
The Isley Brothers’ most accomplished soul and funk albums
of the mid-1970s. Issued on their T-Neck label as PZ 33809,
the album combines socially conscious songwriting,
sophisticated funk grooves, smooth soul ballads and
the distinctive vocal harmonies
that defined the group’s classic period.

The title song, “Harvest For The World,” became one of
the Isleys’ best-known socially conscious recordings.
Written by the six-member Isley Brothers/Chris Jasper creative team,
the song addresses inequality, conflict, peace and the
hope for a better world. The track was recorded at
Record Plant in Los Angeles and features Ronald Isley
on lead vocals, with O’Kelly and Rudolph Isley providing background vocals.

The album was produced by The Isley Brothers, with Chris Jasper
receiving co-production credit on the title track. Malcolm Cecil
worked as engineer and programmer on several recordings.
The Isley Brothers’ combination of Ernie Isley’s guitar and drums,
Marvin Isley’s bass, and Chris Jasper’s keyboards, synthesizers
and clavinet created the polished funk-soul s
ound that became a hallmark of the group during this era.

B.B. King My Kind of Blues Crown Records CLP 5188 original blues vinyl LP

Crown Records 1960 ‎– CLP 5188

notes:

B.B. King – My Kind of Blues is one of the essential
early albums in the catalog of the legendary blues
guitarist and singer. Issued by Crown Records as CLP 5188,
the LP presents B.B. King in a notably direct
and uncluttered blues setting.

The album brings together ten performances
built around King's expressive guitar and unmistakable
voice, including “You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now,”
“Mr. Pawnbroker,” “Driving Wheel,” “My Own Fault, Darling,”
“Catfish Blues” and “Please Set a Date.”

credits:

Line-up & Musicians
B.B. King – vocals, electric guitar
Lloyd Glenn – piano
Ralph Hamilton – bass
Jessie Sailes – drums

This small four-piece combination gives My Kind Of Blues
its distinctive spacious sound, leaving plenty of room
for King's guitar phrasing and voice.
Recording Date & Studio
The most widely supported sessionography places the
principal recordings at Radio Recorders, 7000 Santa Monica
Boulevard, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, in March 1960.
Session records specifically identify the B.B. King/Lloyd Glenn/
Ralph Hamilton/Jessie Sailes session on March 3, 1960
for much of the album's material.

There has historically been some disagreement over the
recording date and location: biographer David McGee associated
the material with 1958 sessions at Chess Records in Chicago,
while researcher Colin Escott identified it with the March 3, 1960
Los Angeles session. For a collector-oriented discography,
the March 1960 Los Angeles attribution is
the better-supported sessionography.

notes:

Great compilation of early BB mono recordings, pre 67.
Boss Of The Blues is a classic collection of early B.B. King
recordings originally made for the RPM/Kent family of
labels during the 1950s. Released by Kent as KLP-5029/KST-529,
the album brings together ten performances that document
King at the height of his formative electric blues period.

B.B. King is heard on vocals and his unmistakable
electric guitar, backed by the sophisticated West Coast
rhythm-and-blues arrangements associated with
the Bihari brothers' Modern/RPM operation. The sessions feature
musicians from King's regular orchestra, including pianists, bassists
, drums and a powerful horn section. Kenneth “Kenny” Sands,
Johnny Board, Lawrence Burdine, Floyd Newman and other
West Coast session players were among the musicians
appearing on King's recordings of this period.

Kenny Sands – trumpet
Lawrence Burdine – alto saxophone
Johnny Board – tenor saxophone
Floyd Newman – baritone saxophone
Millard Lee – piano
Jymie Merritt – bass
Ted Curry – drums

The recordings on Boss Of The Blues were made over
several years, principally in Los Angeles, rather
than during one single session.

1955–1956: Early material was recorded in Los Angeles
and Little Rock, with King's orchestra featuring Kenny Sands,
Lawrence Burdine, Johnny Board, Floyd Newman, Millard Lee,
Jymie Merritt and Ted Curry.
February 25, 1956 – Los Angeles: “The Blues Has Got Me” is
documented from this session.
1957–1958: Further RPM/Kent sessions produced titles such as
“You Know I Go For You,” “Why Do Everything Happen To Me,”
“Days Of Old” and related Kent singles.
1958: “Why Do Everything Happen To Me” / “You Know I Go For You”
appeared on Kent 301, while “Don't Look Now, But I've Got The Blues”
/ “Days Of Old” appeared on Kent 307.
1958: “Please Accept My Love” was issued on Kent 315
and “Worry Worry” on Kent 317.

Davy Jones Live At The Lucky Star Soul Sound 30.556 Dutch soul LP recorded in Amsterdam in 1967

Soul Sound ‎records 1967  – 30.556

 notes:

Davy Jones – Live At The Lucky Star is a rare Dutch 1967
live soul recording featuring American soul singer
Davy Jones backed by the Amsterdam group Pocomania,
the band previously known as HET.

The album was recorded live at the Lucky Star,
an important Amsterdam soul club located on Korte Leidsedwarsstraat,
 on 29 June 1967, between approximately 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. A
mobile recording unit from the G.T.B. studio in The Hague was
used for the session, with John B. van Setten credited as producer.

The album captures Jones performing a powerful mixture of soul,
R&B, blues and early funk, including versions of Ray Charles,
Sam Cooke, Bobby Parker, Otis/Leiber-Stoller and other soul standards.

The LP was issued in the Netherlands in 1967 on Soul Sound 30.556,
in mono/stereo editions. It is regarded by collectors as
an exceptionally rare Dutch soul/funk/garage crossover LP.

Davy Jones And The Voodoo Funk Machine Sookie Sookie 1968 French Philips 849 002 BY vinyl LP

Philips records 1968   849 002

notes:

Released in 1968, Sookie Sookie is the rare Philips album
by Canadian soul singer Davy Jones and The Voodoo Funk Machine.
The French pressing carries the catalog number
Philips 849 002 BY and is documented as
a 12-inch LP running at 33⅓ RPM.

The album blends soul, funk, R&B, psychedelic touches
and raw groove, reflecting Jones's European period and
his collaboration with arranger and composer Janko Nilovic.
 Contemporary discographical research identifies
Nilovic and Jones as responsible for the arrangements on
most of the album, with Jean-Claude Desmarty credited as producer.

The title track, “Sookie Sookie,” was written by Don Covay
and Steve Cropper. It was also issued as a French Philips single,
making this LP an interesting entry in the European history of the song.

credits:

Musicians & Line-up

The complete individual studio line-up for the LP is unfortunately
not fully documented in the available discographic sources.
The principal documented contributors are:

Davy Jones – lead vocals; composer; arranger
Janko Nilovic – arranger; composer/keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist
associated with the French sessions
Harry van Hoof – arranger/conductor on “Sookie Sookie”
Orchestra and female choir directed by Harry van Hoof – backing on “Sookie Sookie”
Jean-Claude Desmarty – producer of the French-recorded material
Bert Schouten – producer of “Sookie Sookie”
Albert Kos – sound engineer on the earlier “Sookie Sookie” session
Gerard Beckers – sound engineer on the earlier “Sookie Sookie” session

The important distinction is that “Sookie Sookie” was recorded
earlier than the other LP material. It had already appeared as a
Dutch Philips single in 1968, with Harry van Hoof directing
the orchestra and choir. The French Philips LP subsequently
incorporated the track into the album.

The French-produced material was recorded during Davy Jones's
period working in France with Janko Nilovic. Billboard also confirms
that “Sookie Sookie” was recorded for Philips in France, although
the detailed session date is not supplied.

Important: the often-cited 29 June 1967 date belongs to an earlier
Davy Jones/Pocomania recording session and should not automatically
be given as the recording date for the Philips 849.002 BY LP.

Image ALT Text Byrdie Green I Got It Bad And That Ain’t Good Prestige PRST 7509 1967 rare soul jazz vinyl LP

Prestige records 1967 ‎– PRST 7509

notes:

Byrdie Green’s I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good) is a
soulful 1967 Prestige Records vocal album that brings
together Green’s powerful blues-inflected voice
with a superb jazz backing group led
by organist Johnny “Hammond” Smith.

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs,
New Jersey, on April 20, 1967, the album features
Houston Person on tenor saxophone, Thornel Schwartz
on guitar, Jimmy Lewis on Fender bass, and
John Harris on drums. Ralph Jones is credited as arranger.

Released as Prestige PRST 7509, the LP contains ten tracks
ranging from blues and soul material to sophisticated pop
standards, including “See See Rider,” “I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good),”
“Cry Me a River,” “This Bitter Earth,” and “People.”

Green’s deep, expressive contralto places the album at the
crossroads of jazz, blues and soul, making I Got It Bad an
especially interesting record for collectors of rare vocal jazz,
soul jazz and vintage Prestige vinyl.
