Byrdie Green’s I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good) is a 
soulful 1967 Prestige Records vocal album that brings 
together Green’s powerful blues-inflected voice 
with a superb jazz backing group led 
by organist Johnny “Hammond” Smith.

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, 
New Jersey, on April 20, 1967, the album features 
Houston Person on tenor saxophone, Thornel Schwartz
 on guitar, Jimmy Lewis on Fender bass, and 
John Harris on drums. Ralph Jones is credited as arranger.

Released as Prestige PRST 7509, the LP contains ten tracks 
ranging from blues and soul material to sophisticated pop 
standards, including “See See Rider,” “I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good),” 
“Cry Me a River,” “This Bitter Earth,” and “People.”

Green’s deep, expressive contralto places the album at the 
crossroads of jazz, blues and soul, making I Got It Bad an 
especially interesting record for collectors of rare vocal jazz, 
soul jazz and vintage Prestige vinyl.
