The Best of Soul Train – Vol. 4 is a celebration of some of the most memorable
performances from the legendary American television program Soul Train.
Released on DVD in 2011, this volume brings together performances by
Luther Vandross, Cheryl Lynn, The Stylistics, Bobby Womack, The Moments,
The Spinners, War, George McCrae, Rufus, Billy Preston and Wilson Pickett.
The compilation looks back across several important periods of Soul Train,
with performances originally broadcast between 1972 and 1982. It captures
the extraordinary combination of soul, R&B, funk, dance and television
culture that made Soul Train such an important part of
Black American popular music history.
Among the highlights are Luther Vandross performing “A House Is Not a Home,”
Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn performing “If This World Were Mine,”
The Stylistics with “Betcha by Golly, Wow” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New,”
George McCrae with “Rock Your Baby,” Rufus with “Tell Me Something Good,”
Billy Preston with “Nothing from Nothing,” and
Wilson Pickett with “Fire and Water” and “Don’t Knock My Love Pt. 1.”
The War performances are particularly representative of the early-1970s
Soul Train sound, with “The World Is a Ghetto,” “Ballero,” “All Day Music,”
and “Slippin’ into Darkness.” Together, the performances demonstrate the
close relationship between soul, funk and the emerging
Black television culture of the period.
