Released in 1967, Oogum Boogum is one of Brenton Wood’s 
defining recordings and an important document of the 
sophisticated, melodic soul sound coming out of Los Angeles 
during the late 1960s. The album was issued by Double Shot Records 
as DSS-5002. MusicBrainz documents the U.S. 12-inch release in 1967.

The centerpiece is “The Oogum Boogum Song,” written by Brenton Wood 
under his birth name, Alfred Smith. The song became a national hit in 1967, 
reaching No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The album also contains “Gimme Little Sign,” another Wood composition 
that became his biggest commercial success, 
reaching the U.S. Top 10 later in 1967.
