Hollywood captures The Crusaders at an important
 turning point in their evolution from the Jazz Crusaders 
into one of the leading jazz-funk groups of the 1970s. 
Released on Motown’s MoWest label in 1972, the album 
combines Wilton Felder’s powerful tenor saxophone and 
Wayne Henderson’s trombone with Joe Sample’s keyboards, 
Stix Hooper’s dynamic drumming, and a distinctive 
combination of electric and acoustic bass and guitar.

The eight-track original LP includes the atmospheric “Spanish Harlem,
” the funky “Try a Little Harder,” Wayne Henderson’s title track
 “Hollywood,” Joe Sample’s “Cold Duck Eddie,” and the energetic 
“Papa Hooper’s Barrelhouse Groove.” The album demonstrates
 the group’s growing interest in electric textures while retaining 
the tight horn arrangements and sophisticated rhythmic 
approach that defined their sound.

For collectors, Hollywood is an important early-1970s
 Crusaders recording, documenting the group just before 
their move to Blue Thumb Records and their subsequent 
expansion into a more prominent jazz-funk sound.
