A Thing To Come By captures Jimmy McGriff at an important 
point in his career. His Hammond organ remains firmly rooted 
in blues and soul, while the horn arrangements give the album 
a broader jazz-funk character. AllMusic describes the record as 
a blend of soul jazz, jazz blues, hard bop and jazz-funk, 
highlighting McGriff’s collaboration with Fats Theus, Larry Frazier
 and guest trumpeter Blue Mitchell.

The album also contains McGriff originals alongside distinctive
 interpretations of “Oh Happy Day” and Aretha Franklin’s
 “Don’t Let Me Lose This Dream.” A contemporary Billboard review
 praised the LP for its rolling, blues-filled sound and driving jazz approach.

For collectors, the original Solid State SS 18060 LP is an important 
entry in McGriff’s Solid State catalogue and a 
strong example of late-1960s organ-led soul jazz.
