Little Walter – Hate To See You Go | Chess LP-1535 Review

Little Walter Hate To See You Go original Chess LP-1535 Chicago Blues vinyl record cover

Chess records 1969  –  LP-1535

 Notes:

Few blues musicians transformed their instrument as dramatically
as Little Walter. By amplifying his harmonica and treating it like a
lead electric guitar, he created a completely new sound that
forever changed Chicago blues.

Released by Chess Records in 1969, Hate To See You Go (LP-1535)
gathers some of Walter's greatest recordings from the golden era
of Chicago blues. Although it is a compilation rather than a contemporary
studio album, it perfectly showcases his remarkable artistry,
emotional vocals, and revolutionary harmonica playing.
For blues collectors, this LP remains one of the finest introductions
to one of the most influential musicians in blues history.

The tracks were recorded between approximately 1955 and 1959.

 Chess records 1957  – Single 1671

 notes:

Few artists shaped the sound of rock & roll as profoundly as Chuck Berry.
Released by Chess Records as catalog number 1671, the single
"Rock & Roll Music" backed with "Blue Feeling" remains
one of the defining records of the 1950s.
"Rock & Roll Music" is one of Berry's signature recordings, celebrating the
excitement and universal appeal of the new musical style that would
soon transform popular music around the world. Driven by Berry's
unmistakable guitar riffs, energetic vocals, and infectious rhythm,
the song became an enduring rock & roll anthem.
The B-side, "Blue Feeling," reveals another side of Berry's songwriting.
Influenced by blues traditions, it delivers a slower, more emotional
performance while showcasing the musical roots that inspired
many of his greatest recordings.
Released on the legendary Chess label, this 45 rpm single is highly sought
after by collectors of classic rock & roll and vintage vinyl. Original
pressings remain important pieces of music history and continue
to attract fans and collectors worldwide.

first time, Chess 1671 represents an essential chapter
in the evolution of American popular music.

Elmo James' "The Sky Is Crying." Released as Sphere Sound Records
LP 7002, this iconic collection captures the raw emotion, soulful slide

one of the most influential figures in blues history.

the sound of modern blues and inspired generations of musicians,

"The Sky Is Crying" showcases Elmo James at the peak of his artistic powers.
The album features some of his most celebrated recordings, blending
traditional Delta blues roots with the emerging electric blues sound that
dominated the post-war era.
The title track, "The Sky Is Crying," remains one of the most recognizable
blues songs ever recorded. Its haunting lyrics and expressive slide guitar
perfectly capture the pain, longing, and resilience that define classic blues music.

This LP was the first U.S. album compilation to gather Elmore James' Bobby
Robinson-produced recordings made between 1959 and 1961 in Chicago and
New York. Seven tracks had originally appeared on Robinson's Fire label
singles before being collected on the Sphere Sound album.

Buddy Guy – Hard But It's Fair / No Lie 1963

Deep Dive: Buddy Guy’s 1963 Chess Single 'Hard But It’s Fair' & 'No Lie'

Buddy Guy Chess Records vinyl label for Hard But Its Fair and No Lie 1963 release.

Chess records  1963– 1878

notes:

Deep Dive: Buddy Guy's 1963 Chess Single "Hard But It's Fair" & "No Lie"
Chess Records 1963 – #1878
If you want to hear the exact moment Chicago blues began its metamorphosis
into something rawer and more electric, don't look to the charts — listen to this
7-inch, recorded at Ter-Mar Studios in August 1963.
By the time Buddy Guy cut these sides, he had already been on the Chess roster
for three years, often relegated to session work behind Muddy Waters and
Howlin' Wolf. Leonard and Phil Chess recognized his talent but were never
quite sure how to market it. This single, one of the more urgent releases from
that period, captures a guitarist operating at the edge of what the studio could contain.
The A-Side: "Hard But It's Fair" (Willie Dixon)
Written by Willie Dixon — the architect of the Chess blues catalogue — the track
opens with a biting, percussive guitar tone that cuts through the horn arrangemen
t like a blade. Buddy plays with a controlled ferocity that sets him apart from
contemporaries who favored smoother, jazz-inflected textures. Lafayette
Leake's piano anchors the rhythm while the horns drive the track forward
with locomotive intensity. It's a song about resilience in the face of hardship,
and the band plays it like they mean every word.
The B-Side: "No Lie" (Buddy Guy & Billy Emerson)
Where the A-side is an adrenaline shot, "No Lie" is the slow burn. Co-written
by Guy himself, it showcases his voice as much as his guitar — soulful, unguarded,
testifying rather than performing. The dynamic contrast between near-silence
and sudden bursts of volume on this track would later become a signature of
artists like Jimi Hendrix, who famously cited Buddy Guy as a primary influence.
You can hear why.
