Ramsey Lewis – Goin' Latin (Cadet Records LPS-790, 1967)

Ramsey Lewis – Goin' Latin (Cadet LPS-790) | Rare Soul Jazz Vinyl Guide

Original cover of Ramsey Lewis Goin' Latin on Cadet Records LPS-790, classic 1967 soul jazz and Latin jazz vinyl LP

Cadet Records 1966 ‎– LPS 790

Notes:

Released in 1967 on Cadet Records, Goin' Latin finds
Ramsey Lewis exploring Afro-Cuban and Brazilian influences
while maintaining the soulful piano style that made him one
of the most successful jazz artists of the 1960s. Following
the crossover success of The In Crowd and Wade in the Water,
Lewis blended infectious Latin grooves with sophisticated
jazz improvisation, creating an album equally suited for
jazz listeners and fans of danceable instrumental music.

Produced by the legendary Esmond Edwards for Cadet Records,
the album features polished arrangements, memorable melodies,
and rhythmic percussion that reflect the growing influence
of Latin music on American jazz during the decade. The result
 is an engaging fusion of
soul jazz, bossa nova, mambo, and hard-swinging Chicago jazz.

credits:

Arranged By, Conductor – Richard Evans
Bass – Cleveland Eaton
Drums – Maurice White
Piano – Ramsey Lewis
augmented by Percussion,
Bass, and strings
The album was expanded beyond the trio with an orchestra
arranged by Richard Evans, featuring:
Unidentified brass section
Unidentified string section
Unidentified Latin percussionists
Unfortunately, Cadet Records did not credit the individual orchestral
or percussion musicians on the original LP, and no verified
AFM session sheets identifying these players have been published.

The Braceros – Sunny / Spanish Moss (VAULT V-930)

The Braceros – Sunny / Spanish Moss (VAULT V-930): A Rare Northern Soul & Funk Treasure

Original The Braceros Sunny Spanish Moss VAULT V-930 vintage soul and funk vinyl single record

VAULT records ‎1966 – V-930

 notes:

Released on the prestigious Vault Records label as catalog number V-930,
The Braceros' "Sunny" backed with "Spanish Moss" remains a fascinating
collectible for soul, funk, and Northern Soul enthusiasts. While many
versions of Bobby Hebb's classic "Sunny" appeared throughout the late
1960s and early 1970s, The Braceros delivered a distinctive interpretation
that blended soulful vocals, tight musicianship, and infectious rhythm.

The A-side, "Sunny," offers a vibrant and groove-driven take on the beloved
standard. The band's arrangement brings a fresh energy to the song,
combining soulful expression with dancefloor appeal that continues to
resonate with vinyl collectors today.

On the flip side, "Spanish Moss" showcases a deeper, moodier atmosphere.
Rich instrumentation and subtle funk influences create a memorable
listening experience, making it a favorite among
DJs searching for lesser-known gems from the era.

credits:

here is no official individual band member credit printed on the 7" vinyl.
In the 1960s Los Angeles music scene, "The Braceros" was almost certainly
a pseudonym created for a group of top-tier West Coast studio session
musicians. The name "Bracero" translates from Spanish to mean "manual
worker" (derived from brazo, meaning arm), paying a thematic homage
to the Latin, jazz, and soul crossover style they were playing. The track features:
Lead Vocals / Ensemble: Latin Soul/Boogaloo style vocal delivery.
Instrumentation: A tight rhythm section consisting of driving drums,
heavy bass, upfront Latin percussion (congas/timbales), and a sharp
brass/horn section executing a mid-tempo groove behind Bobby Hebb's
classic "Sunny" melody.Because it was a localized studio-only project
designed to capitalize on the 1966 Latin soul craze, the exact names
of the session players remain lost to time, sealed within Vault's lost logbooks.
Today, the single remains highly sought after by Popcorn, Soul, and Latin Jazz vinyl collectors.

Producer – Jack Lewerke

Mongo Santamaria – Explodes at the Village Gate (1967 Live Album Review & Tracklist)

Mongo Santamaria Explodes at the Village Gate 1967 album cover

Columbia records 1967   CS 9570

notes:

Few live jazz recordings capture raw energy and rhythmic
intensity quite like Explodes at the Village Gate, the 1967
album by Mongo Santamaria. Recorded in New York City at
the legendary Village Gate, this album stands as one of the
defining moments in Latin jazz history.
Blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with soul jazz grooves, Santamaria
delivers a performance that is both hypnotic
and explosive true to the album’s title.
Released in 1967, Explodes at the Village Gate captures
Mongo Santamaria at the height of his creative powers.
Backed by a tight, groove-driven band, he transforms the
live setting into a powerful rhythmic journey.
This recording reflects the vibrant New York jazz scene of
the late 1960s, where Latin, soul, and jazz influences merged
into a new, electrifying sound. Santamaria, already known for
bridging Afro-Cuban traditions with modern jazz,
pushes that fusion even further here.

 notes:

El Chicano delivered a distinctive blend of Latin rock, soul, funk,
and jazz that helped define the Chicano music movement. Their
album Revolucion, issued on Kapp Records KS 3640, remains a
favorite among vinyl enthusiasts and collectors of
classic West Coast sounds.
Released during the golden era of Latin rock, Revolucion
showcases El Chicano's signature fusion of smooth grooves,
soulful vocals, and vibrant instrumentation. The band's unique
style bridged rock, rhythm and blues, and traditional Latin influences,
creating a sound that continues to resonate with listeners decades later.
