Formed in 1962 by Michael Z. Gordon, the Routers recordings
sometimes used session musicians in addition to the actual
group with the exception of Gordon who also formed another
successful group, The Marketts. Gordon composed another
Award winning composition, "Out Of Limits" with the Marketts.
Gordon played on almost all of The Routers and Marketts sessions.
The original line up of the group was Al Kait-lead guitar;
Lynn Frasier-tenor saxophone; Michael Zane Gordon-rhythm guitar, vocals;
Scott Walker (then recording as Scott Engel)-bass guitar; Randy Viers-drums.

First Watts 103rd Band
The name, Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band was originally coined
by Los Angeles producer and Keymen Records owner Fred Smith in
1967. However, between 1967 and 1968, the Watts 103rd name applied
to three, arguably four different personnel configurations before
settling into the final band who played on every Watts 103rd album
from 1968 forward.
Smith produced a theme song for KGFJ radio personality, DJ
Magnificent Montague. The song became so popular that Smith released
it as a single in 1967 and created the name, Watts 103rd St.
Rhythm Band for the studio group who had recorded it. Purportedly,
the players on the single included Wright, James Carmichael,
Leon Haywood, Bobby Womack
There is some confusion because, after "Spreadin' Honey" became a success,
Montague re-released the single on the MoSoul label (a Keyman subsidiary)
and credited to a different group altogether, the Soul Runners. It has been
long assumed that the Soul Runners were simply an earlier line-up of the
Watts Band however, according to Wright, the two groups had nothing to
do with one another whatsoever.

Released in 1969 on Warner Bros. Records, In the Jungle, Babe captures 

The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band at a creative peak, blending funk, 

soul, and R&B with socially aware lyrics and polished studio musicianship.

Led by Charles Wright, the group helped shape the sound of West Coast 

funk during the late 1960s and early 1970s, standing alongside artists 

who bridged raw groove with sophisticated arrangements.

The album is notable for its tight rhythm section, expressive horn lines, 

and Wright’s distinctive vocal delivery. While best remembered for later 

hits such as “Express Yourself,” this record documents the band’s evolution

 toward the crossover success they would soon achieve.

This album is dedicated to Joe Banks and his grandma,
whose great grandmother was born "in the jungle"

the original line up consisted of:

James Gadson (drums) 

Charles Wright is a singer, pianist, guitarist, and leader of the eight-member band.

The group were from Watts area in Los Angeles.

As the Soul Runners, they released 'Grits and Cornbread' in 1967 for the Keymen Imprint.

That album reached the U.S. R & B Top 30.

The 'Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band' album contained the popular 'Spreadin' Honey' 

and was produced by the late Fred Smith (b. Fred Sledge Smith, 18th May 1933, Los Angeles,

 California, U.S.A., d. 29th July 2005, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.).

Fred wrote 'Harlem Shuffle' for Bob & Earl.
